POWER GENERATION WITH OCEAN WAVES

Ocean Energy---An infinitely abundant, eco-friendly source of power

Project Synopsis.

EXPERIMENTAL PROJECT FOR POWER GENERATION THROUGH OCEAN WAVES

The experiment was carried out at Manganpudi Beach, near Machilipatnam, in Krishna District, in the State of Andhra Pradesh, in India. The Equipment, was placed about100 meters from the shore, in low tide. The unit functioned efficiently, in both high and low tides.

The height of the Unit is about 26 feet. The length of the unit i.e. the ocean front occupied by the unit is 6 feet. The width of the unit is about 5 feet.

The weight of the float used, is 1000Kgs to 1500 Kgs. (the weight can be varied as required).

The lifting capacity of the float, is about 2000Kgs (or even more).

There are, about 4 to 8 waves and sometimes 12 to 16 waves, a minute. (i.e. every 15 seconds, there is 1or 2 or 3 or sometimes even, 4 waves).

Each wave, gives mechanical energy, to the turbine, through the float, which is as follows;

1. An upward force, equaling to 2000 Kgs (i.e.the lifting capacity of the float) X height through which the float is lifted by the wave (I prefer, to call it an upward stroke); and,

2. A downward force, equaling to 1000 Kgs (i.e.the weight of the float) X height through which the float falls with the wave (a downward stroke).

Even if, the weight of the float and its lifting capacity is made less, when hundreds or thousands of these units, are placed, singly or in rows of 2 or more units, side by side, without any gap in between the single units or between the rows of units, along the coast, at depths of about 5meters to 10 meters or more of the sea, (so that, the incident wave acting on the single or two or more floats of a row, does not lose any of its energy to the ocean floor, and all the energy contained in that incident wave is used in lifting the single or two or more floats of that row), then, the combined energy, of all the floats, of all the rows, would be enormous.

All the units are interconnected and their mechanical energy, over a stretch of 1KM or more, is brought to a point, to run a single electric generator of a capacity, proportional to the total energy obtained from all the individual units.

In the above Experimental Unit, a Generator of 2 KVA of 1500 RPM was used and several bulbs of 100 Watts were lighted. Video coverage of the Power Produced was taken.

--------------------------------

Regarding ocean wave energy, one estimate puts that with swells of 9 feet, there is the energy of 755MWs per Sq.Mile and with swells of 5 feet there is the energy of 242MWs per Sq.Mile.

It is possible to construct floating Power Units. These floating Power Units are similar to the about units except that they are made to float using the Archimedes principle of buoyancy. It is the relative motion of the float to the unit that drives the turbine. Here too, hundreds or thousands of these units could be interconnected to run single electric Generators of over 100MWs(and possibility upto210MWs or more).Presently,Transmission through cables is a big problem. However, l hope, that young Scientists and Engineers in Universities the World Over will solve this problem through laser beam technology, as many properties of a laser beam, seem to be similar to that of a conductor.

Pollution and Global Warming are very very serious problems. We all sat at the edge of our seats while seeing the movie Titanic, probably because we are all sensitive and humane at our heart. But in reality, we are all on a different kind of Titanic which is moving at full throttle to hit the dooms day.I believe we still have the time to change the course and that too at full throttle.

Hi...
Global Warming and Climate Change are very serious issues. We should get all our Power through non-conventional sources of energy. My technology for Power generation through Ocean waves is one way by which, entire World could be powered. There is another way, which I believe can Power the World to some extent. This technology is similar to OTEC technology. Only difference is that this technology can be used on land. This is my Idea and those who have money may invest to make it feasible.
In OTEC technology Ocean surface water temperature is about 30 °C and at depths of 500meters to700 meters about 5 °C to 8 °C. It is this temperature difference that is used to heat and condense a mixture of water and ammonia, and generate electric power. This kind of Power Generation is costly, as pipes carrying water and ammonia mixture need to be insulated and suspended to a depth of 500 meters to 700 meters below the sea, from a ship and will have to withstand Ocean Currents and other problems. This insulated pipeline also may be laid on ocean floor, to a depth of 700 meters, but that would cover many kilometers of Ocean floor and thus probably loose thermal insulation efficiency and be very costly. .In India this project has been taken up at a cost of 35Crores i.e.about $7million.
Putting up this technology on land will cost much less, and have none of the problems faced in the ocean and thus cost much less in maintainance. Here, is my view. Night time temperature in many parts of the World reaches 5°C to 7°C. Most of the time we need electric power in the nights. Geothermal temperature, 6 feet below the ground is fairly constant between 14°C -16°C. 10,000feet (i.e.about 3300 meters) below the ground, the temperature is over 100°C. It is possible to sink pipes below the ground to a depth, where the required temperature of 30°C is present. So, on one hand we have 5°C to 7°C.on the surface land and on the other 30°C about 1000meters below the ground. In contrast to Ocean Thermal Energy Technology(OTEC), if successful, this new
technology may be termed as Land Thermal Energy Conversion Technology(LTEC). It is also possible to get the required 30°C from stored solar energy. For this, a big size Pond is filled with saturated salt water (Brine) .The pond absorbs solar heat. The pond may be surrounded with Solar water heating units and this heat may be transferred to the pond through pipes criss crossing the pond.
I strongly feel that this technology works. This technology may be implemented where night time temperatures dip to 5°C to 7°C. I personally do not have any experience nor the required money to invest. The power produced with this technology, (in contrast to my Ocean Wave Energy Tecnology, where single large generators of over 100MWs upto 210MWs can be run with Ocean wave energy obtained in a stretch of 2 Kilometers to 4 Kilometers), may be only few hundred kiloWatts sufficint for few houses. This Technology may be implemented in individual houses.
I am putting a small video of OTEC technology in video section.
Further, I am putting forth a small video gift, which I wish to share with my friend Carolyn Elefant OREC Administrator and other members of OREC. We need to protect Environment and all Life on Earth. It is high time to discard Fossil Fuels and get 100% of our Energy through Non-conventional sources, much before the year 2020.

Thank You.

Dear Dr. Pruthvi Raj Avadhuta,
Thank you for your response to my comments. It is good to know that you are not interested in commercially exploiting the inventions you have posted on the site. You expect this invention to be utilized for the good of the mankind.
I would like to point it out here that how is it possible unless it is implemented by some one? As you know the capital cost to put up any project based on this technology would be exhorbitant. No individual or even any NGO can afford to put up a plant of this kind and use it without profits for the good of mankind. One has to be practical in these matters. When this technology is used by any power company, it is an alternative to the use of already depleting fossil fuels and will reduce the greenhouse gases effect and ultimate reduction in global warming. Moreover, there would be some more jobs created. Would all this not be for the good of mankind? And if, someone makes some profit in the process, what is wrong in that?
Anyway, you are at liberty to think the way you like and, if I have offended your feelings, I appologize for the same.
As I mentioned earlier, I am a marine engineer presently teaching in a marine engineering institute at Mumbai. I have recently started consultancy services in the fields of energy, conventional as well as non conventional and water & waste water management. It will be my pleasure to help promotion of new technology.

Best regards.

Dear Friends,
OREC site is being used for advertisement---www.makemoneywith-google.com.
I believe that we have all--which ever part of the world we are in,whatever our backgrounds are, whatever our economic statuses are, whatever our beliefs are--have come on a single platform OREC
to discuss, share, and do something, however small it may be,to promote Ocean Renewable Energy.I have joined OREC to show my
technology, discuss some absolutely new technologies for which I do not have the money to Patent or to invest in.I wish all the members open up and discuss, and interact and be free to talk without apprenhension to promote non conventional energy sources.
I feel that if we all give our e-mail ids, these advertisements
could be posted there and OREC site would hold all that value for
which we have joined.
My e-mail id is--pruthvi.avadhuta@gmail.com
I don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings at all.

WHY OCEAN WAVE ENERGY ?

( An infinitely abundant, eco-friendly source of power )

Please note the following facts.

POLLUTION & GLOBAL WARMING

(In a Nutshell)

Scientists say that the amount of Carbon-dioxide that is right now present in the atmosphere, is sufficient to heat the world for the next 50 years.

Global Warming is a very, very serious issue. In about 70 years from now (BBC News 2nd Nov.2004), Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle (BBC News 2nd Feb.2005), will lose, greater part of their ice and a number of islands would get submerged. It is said, that Manhattan would submerge by about 20 feet.

Deforestation, Alarming increase in motor vehicles, Construction of newer thermal power stations based on coal, oil and gas are principally responsible for global warming.

THERMAL POWER STATIONS

Coal based Thermal Power Stations of 1260MWs need about 28,000 Tonnes of Coal a day.

Cost of the Coal per tonne, in our Country is over Rs.500/--, Transportation to some of the Power Stations is over Rs.700/-- per tonne. Cost of the imported Coal is twice this amount (i.e.over Rs.3000/--per tonne). The time lag for the transportation of the imported Coal is 3 months. A number of Thermal Power Stations maintain Coal stocks, taking great care to prevent accidental burn out (however, about 10% of the coal is lost, this way). Carbon-monoxide from the burning coal is extremely harmful to the health.

Burning Coal releases, large quantities of Radio-active material directly into the air (in fact, a Thermal Power Station releases more radio-active material than a Nuclear Power Station). This is a true health hazard for hundreds of kilometers around.

American Statistics show that Coal based Thermal Power Stations, kill about 25,000 people a year, through soot in the air. In India, where the population density is more, no figures are available.

Highly efficient Coal based Thermal Power Stations in India, are 35% efficient only. A 1260MW Thermal power station gives out, 3000MWs to 5000MWs of heat, directly into the atmosphere. Efficiencies of some of the Thermal Power Stations in our Country and the world over, are deplorable.

Depending on the Efficiency of a Thermal Power Station,--9% to 20% or more of the Power Generated, is consumed within the Power Station itself.

A 1260MW Thermal Power Station needs 1260 personnel to maintain.

Gestation period, for the construction of a thermal power station is 3 to 5 years and the ‘life time’ is said to be 30 years.

Coal ash needs large areas for dumping. Coal ash pollutes the water around, pollutes the fields, and destroys the health and environment. The real price that is being paid by men, women and children and animals and plants (for, they too are living like us), may never be calculated.

Now, consider the following facts.

OCEAN ENERGY TECHNOLOGY

(COMBINED WITH WIND ENERGY & SOLAR ENERGY).

A stretch of 15 kms. of Ocean, at depths of over 10 meters, has energy, equaling to 1500MWs to10,000MWs or more at some places.

Availability factor, for Ocean Energy is, over 90%. Availability factor, for Wind Energy and Solar Energy is, just 20%to30% only.(However, for wind energy this factor could be improved 60% to 80%, with innovative techniques).

Cost of the Ocean Energy Project, approximately, by my 'Power India Technologies' is, Rs.700,00,000/MW initially, and can possibly be reduced, (after, all the infrastructure that is needed for this kind of power generation is established), to less than the cost for thermal power generation (i,e.Rs. 400,00,000/MW) This in effect, will turn out to be the lowest cost, when compared to any other form of Power Generation, the World over, that produces power continuously, throughout the year. And, add to this--No recurrent fuel costs(fossil fuels with consequent pollution and global warming) and also the fact, that this kind of Power Generation is almost maintenance free (a 100MW ocean wave energy Power Station could possibly be run with a staff of two(2) to four(4) personnel).

It is possible to run a single electric generator of 100MWs or more, with the ocean energy, obtained in a stretch of one kilometer or more.

The following facts should be noted for the ocean energy technology, in contrast to thermal power generation.

•Only Installation costs. No Land acquisition for the Construction of the Project.
•No Fuel costs.
•No Transportation costs.
•No Internal Power Consumption in the Plant.
•No Pollution. No Global Warming.
•No Radio-active fall-out.
•No Fuel Stocks needed. No fear of accidental Fuel Burn-out. No carbon-monoxide poisoning.
•No Effluents. No Land destruction.
•No Health Hazards.
•No Gestation Period. Power Generation starts from the very first unit and the life time depends on the civil construction of the project which could be over 100 years.

THANK YOU.
